Winter - The Peak Season

5°C - 22°C · Cool, clear days · Cold mornings

Winter is the best time to visit Rajaji National Park for most visitors. The weather is cool and pleasant, wildlife activity peaks, and migratory birds from Central Asia and Siberia arrive in large numbers. Vegetation thins after the monsoon - visibility in the forest is at its best.

December and January are the coldest months, with temperatures at the gate dropping to 3-5°C at 6 AM. Bring a warm jacket for open jeep safaris. February is the single best month - temperatures are milder, wildlife is highly active, and tourist crowds are slightly lower than December-January peak.

Spring - The Comfortable Season

12°C - 32°C · Warm days · Pleasant mornings

Spring brings comfortable warmth to Rajaji. The forest bursts into bloom - Palash (flame of the forest) and Amaltas paint the jungle in vivid reds and yellows. Newborn spotted deer and sambar calves appear with their mothers in March-April, making it a magical season for families and photographers.

Wildlife activity remains high. Predators are active - leopards and tigers are frequently seen hunting in the warmer afternoons. Fewer crowds than winter make slot availability easier. Best season for families with children - mornings are warm enough to be comfortable without heavy clothing.

Pre-Monsoon - The Tiger Season

28°C - 42°C · Hot afternoons · Cool early mornings

Counterintuitive but true: May and June are the best months to see tigers in Rajaji. As the heat intensifies, animals concentrate at the few remaining waterholes - making sightings dramatically more predictable. Morning safaris start at 5:30 AM to beat the heat, catching peak animal activity.

Very low tourist numbers mean completely private forest experiences - no other jeeps blocking your view. Serious wildlife photographers specifically plan trips in May-June for this reason. Jhilmil Jheel is open until June 30 and is excellent for bird watching in this period.

Season & Weather FAQ

The best time to visit Rajaji National Park is November to February (winter season). Cool weather (5-22°C), peak wildlife activity, migratory birds, and reliable tiger and elephant sightings make this ideal. February is the single best month - perfect weather, high wildlife activity, and fewer crowds than December-January. For tiger sightings specifically, May-June (pre-monsoon) is actually the best period.
Rajaji National Park opens every year on November 15 and closes on June 15. Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Zone stays open until June 30 - two weeks longer than the rest of the park. The park remains closed July to mid-November during the monsoon season for wildlife protection and forest recovery.
Yes - summer (May-June) is excellent for tiger sightings. Animals concentrate at waterholes in the pre-monsoon heat, making sightings highly predictable. Morning safaris start at 5:30 AM when temperatures are still comfortable (22-28°C). The main challenge is afternoon heat (38-42°C) - but safaris end by 9 AM. Very low crowds and lower hotel rates make it great value.
December in Rajaji is cool and pleasant - daytime temperatures range from 8°C to 22°C. Nights drop to 3-5°C. Safari mornings at 6 AM feel very cold in open jeeps - bring a warm jacket, gloves, and a cap. Wildlife activity is excellent, migratory birds are present, and visibility through thinning vegetation is at its best. It is peak tourist season - book 2-3 weeks in advance.
Yes - Rajaji has 315+ bird species including 87 migratory species. The best season for bird watching is November to February when migratory birds from Central Asia and Siberia arrive. Jhilmil Jheel Conservation Zone and Mohand Range are the top birding zones. Signature species: Great Pied Hornbill, Pallas's Fish Eagle, and Himalayan Pied Kingfisher. Jhilmil Jheel is open until June 30 for late-season birding.
Yes. April is excellent for families. Temperatures are warm but comfortable (18-34°C), mornings are pleasant for safaris, newborn deer and sambar calves appear in March-April, and tourist crowds are lower than peak winter season. Children aged 5-12 get 50% entry fee discount. Evening safaris in April are particularly good for leopard activity and bird watching.
Yes. The park opens on November 15. Early November safaris offer lush post-monsoon greenery, rejuvenated forests, and fresh animal activity. The forest is densely vegetated immediately after monsoon, which can slightly reduce visibility but makes the landscape spectacularly green. Wildlife is highly active after the 5-month closure. Migratory birds start arriving in late November. Temperatures are very pleasant (15-25°C).
For a December-January morning safari at 6 AM: thermal inner layer, fleece mid-layer, windproof jacket on top. Warm cap and gloves for the first hour. Temperatures at the open gate are 3-8°C and the moving jeep makes it feel colder. By 9 AM temperatures reach 16-18°C - you will be removing layers. Wear earthy tones (khaki, olive, brown) - no white or bright colours inside the forest.
